with corporate10 profits at near record highs, we should encourage corporations to invest more in research and development and the salaries of their employees. it's time for us to invest in educational opportunity to guarantee that we have the most highly skilledworkforce11 in the world, for 6 out of every 10 jobs in the near term is going to require some education beyond high school. folks, it's long past due to increase the minimum wage that will lift millions of hardworking families out of poverty target poverty and in the process produce a ripple12 effect that boosts wages for the middle class and spurs economic growth for the united states of america. economists13 acknowledge that if we do these and other things, wages will go up and we'll increase the gross domestic product of the united states.

my fellow americans, we know how to do this. we've done it before. it's the way we used to do business and we can do it that way again. all the middle class in this country want is a chance. no guarantee, just a chance.

americans want to work. and when given a fair shot, the american worker has never, ever, ever, let his country down. folks, it's never a good bet to bet against the american people.

Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.

About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.

While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said “no.” I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. “Look,” he said, “We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails，but one who never quits.”

I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!

As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!

Dongying，my home，is located in the vast delta plains of the majestic YellowRiver. There are reeds undulating on the golden beach and varies birds soaringover the wetlands. Dongying is a city of oil as well as ecology. The roaringfrom the running drillings and the sweat on the faces of oil workers witnessedthe development of this land.

As an out-and-out child of Dongying，I have lived here for 20 years. Ididn’t experience the full glorious history of the land，but the customs and thespirits have branded in my heart. I could not erase them, for I am a daughter ofan oil worker.

The sincere and hard-working people here taught me what is perseverance;our mother river and the magnificent Bohai Sea show me catholicity; the elegantswans and the azure sky give us the best instance for harmony between humanbeings and the environment. Actually，all of them are the fortune for my wholelife.

It is not difficult for us to find immense differences happened inDongying, especially after the reforming and opening-up. When I was a volunteerof the China-Dongying International Petroleum Equipment & TechnologyExhibition in 20xx，what shocked me is the rapid growth of this land. With theincreasing development of social modernization，we aim not only at efficientlyimproving people’s life，but in the success of constructing an affluent societyand thoroughly applying the Scientific Outlook on Development in recent decades.In order to achieve these goals，it will be our responsibilities to makecontributions. As a student at college，the greatest contribution I can do is tokeep the determination，endeavor to study scientific knowledge and keep the senseof historical responsibility. In this way，I believe，the future of Dongying willbe better.
